Island Speech Therapy supports individuals with MND, Huntington’s Disease, Batten’s Disease, Acquired Brain Injuries, and Cerebral Palsy. We provide communication, AAC, and dysphagia support tailored to each condition. Services are client-centred, proactive, and collaborative, focusing on maintaining quality of life, autonomy, and safety at every stage of disease progression.

Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)

Island Speech Therapy offers expert AAC support across high- and low-tech options. We manage a large equipment pool, including eye gaze systems, EMG switches, head trackers, and communication tablets. From assessment, funding requests, implementation to training, we ensure AAC tools are effective, empowering, and accessible. Our goal is to support communication, autonomy, and participation for individuals with complex needs.

FASD & Families Moving Forward (FMF)

We are currently Australia’s only speech therapist trained in the Families Moving Forward program for children aged 3–14 with FASD. This evidence-based program supports caregivers through practical strategies, education, and behavioural coaching. It enhances everyday functioning, reduces stress, and builds understanding of neurodevelopmental challenges in a compassionate, family-centred way over multiple guided sessions.

Dysphagia

Island Speech Therapy provides expert support for swallowing difficulties caused by neurological conditions, illness, or injury. We offer assessments, strategies, and care planning to ensure safe and dignified mealtimes. Collaborating with families and allied health teams, we promote aspiration prevention through personalized education, mealtime management plans, and therapy that respects each individual’s needs and choices.

Peers & ASD

Island Speech Therapy delivers neuro-affirming support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder using evidence-based approaches, including the PEERS® program and the Critical Core game. We build on each person’s strengths and lived experience to support authentic social connection, communication, and self-understanding. Services include coaching, emotional regulation, and social thinking, all tailored to individual goals and delivered with respect and understanding.

Dysarthria & AI Voice Banking

Island Speech Therapy helps individuals with dysarthria improve speech clarity and preserve their voice using AI voice banking. We support breath control, articulation, and speech rate, and assist clients to create personalized synthetic voices before speech loss. Services are ideal for progressive conditions and can be achieved retroactively.

Fluency

Unlock your voice and conquer stuttering. Our evidence-based speech pathology services empower individuals of all ages to achieve fluency in an affirming approach. In addition Island Speech Therapy is trained in recognising tic disorders and Tourette’s and can differentiate them from fluency concerns.

Speech Sound Disorders

Our speech pathology services specialize in helping individuals overcome speech sound disorders for improved communication and confidence.

Language Disorders

Island Speech Therapy can assist in assessing language abilities across all ages and provide evidence based interventions.

Families Moving Forward

Families Moving Forward is a CDC-recommended, evidence-based behavioral intervention for families raising children (ages 3 to 13) with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) or FASD, and challenging behavior. It offers ready-to-use materials and clinical strategies that are well organized to support families navigating complex situations, including early adversity, school participation, communication and family stress. The program can be completed by telehealth. It consists of fortnightly 1 ½ h sessions with the parent. Families Moving Forward will take around 9 months or around 15 sessions to complete. Funding can be billed through NDIS Speech Therapy or Behaviour Support budgets as well as private.

Can I claim your services through Medicare or Private Health Insurance?

What area do you cover with your mobile service?

Are you a neurodiverse affirming practice?

At Island Speech Therapy we are passionate about learning from neurodivergent voices in the community. We do this in a range of ways; from engaging with neurodivergent social media pages and groups, undertaking professional development created and led by neurodivergent people and keeping up with the latest research into best practice. We also have direct personal experience with neurodiversity across various ages and neuro types. This has resulted in a core value that we accept that ALL brains and people are unique, and this results in moving away from a medical deficits-based model to a strength based, functional model of service. This means we take the time to understand our clients, nurture their strengths as well as empower them to gain skills that will make a difference in their everyday lives. At Island Speech Therapy our aim is to make functional gains and to increase active choices by gaining self awareness and positive self esteem through empowering knowledge.

How long will therapy take?

Every individual is unique, making it challenging to determine the therapy duration. Therapy for both adults and children can range from weeks to months, depending on the nature and severity of the difficulties. People with complex needs may require long-term support. We regularly review therapy programs and progress, collaborating to develop ongoing intervention plans that best suit the individual’s needs.

How much does a session cost?

Fees for services are based on the initial assessment, session duration, and location. Kindly reach out to us for the updated fee schedule. You may qualify for Medicare rebates or funding through the National Disability Insurance Scheme or My Aged Care.

What does a common session look like?

A common session (not an assessment, training or initial intake session) will consist of 45min face to face time and 15min for organisational tasks (note writing, session set up, etc…).
